PORTLAND PARKS AND RECREATION

 

Portland Parks & Recreation is the steward of 10,000 acres of land which covers:

35 community parks
47 habitat parks
98 neighborhood parks
5 golf courses
12 regional parks
12 urban parks
50 recreation facilities
40 other sites

- Managing this resource involves . . .
- Inspecting playground equipment at 110 sites, everyday
- Picking up a lot of litter at all sites (1,000 cans emptied daily of 924 annual tons of garbage)
- Cleaning 150 park restroom buildings
- Mowing almost 1300 acres of grass
- Grooming sports fields at 365 sites (includes 91 school fields where we just mow)
- Issuing over 5,543 permits for picnics, weddings, ballgames, and special events in parks
- Maintaining 119 outdoor tennis courts

- Caring for 150 miles of trails and pathways and 17 miles of paved roads
- Upkeep on 205 drinking fountains and 1,080 picnic tables
- Horticultural care of 19,700 rose bushes, 70,000 flowering annuals and numerous shrub beds
- Managing 25 community gardens (with 2,800 citizen gardeners)
- Providing care to eight gardens (International Rose Test Garden, Ladd’s Addition Rose Garden, - Peninsula Park Rose Garden, Hoyt Arboretum, and Leach Botanical, Crystal Springs - Rhododendron, Classical Chinese, and Japanese Gardens)
- Maintaining one skateboard park, four off-leash sites, two amphitheaters, one race track, and ten docks
- Managing regional parks – each with over one million visitors annually (Forest, Washington, Waterfront)
- Maintaining and/or operating 13 community centers, 6 community schools, 14 swimming pools, one music center, one arts center, one children’s museum, one cultural center, two tennis centers, one dance studio, and one mansion
PP&R’s relationship with five Portland public school districts . . .

As the second largest provider of programs for children, Portland Parks & Recreation also provides programs at school sites to ensure as many children as possible can be served. Portland serves five school districts with the community schools and SUN schools program. 21,970 kids play soccer, softball, football, lacrosse, rugby, ultimate frisbee, and baseball on 365 sport fields that includes 91 Portland Public School sites mowed by PP&R.
